New, disruptive technologies are transforming the day-to-day work of Departments of Transportation (DOTs) all over the country. City and county DOTs and transit authorities are already seeing an impact on public transit numbers. Nationally, there’s been an estimated 6% decrease in public transit ridership due to ride-share programs alone.
For-profit technologies are focusing on offering access to those affluent enough to afford their services but, as servants of the public good, cities are focused on serving ALL of their community members, especially bringing those at a disadvantage closer to opportunities.
