Open Data for a Diverse Population in Strathcona County
Set in the middle of Alberta’s energy and agricultural heartland, Strathcona County is a mixture of urban area, small hamlets, and farmland. To build on its economic strength and to power the success of its citizens, the county launched its open data portal in 2014 with the goals of increasing transparency, advancing community engagement, and improving service efficiency. Strathcona’s open data portal offers a variety of datasets covering areas such as amenities, ward boundaries, pathways, and census data. It also offers rich geospatial data of the entire county for download — an important asset for planning Strathcona’s diverse land use.
In 2015, Strathcona County received the Open Data for Value award for excellence in delivering public policy outcomes using open data at the Canadian Open Data Summit.
