Done right, open data can answer nearly endless amounts of questions. But the key phrase there is “done right” — because for decades, software technology used by government was designed for the needs of businesses, which can differ sharply from the goals of government.

In this week’s featured ODTV video, board member Bob Runge discusses how Socrata’s products, designed specifically for the government, are “breaking new ground.” In all levels of government, from local to federal, technology is being used not only to automate existing processes, but also, as Runge frames it, “tap into the creative and innovative juices that come out of civic organizations around the world to collaboratively build things that have never existed before.”

Watch the video to hear Bob Runge’s full take on the collaborative forces that can be unleashed from civic organizations. And browse ODTV for more videos on the intersection between citizen engagement, government, and open data.
