ODTV Video of the Week: Increasing Government’s Efficiency and Effectiveness

May 15, 2015 6:34 am PST | Effective Governing

Want to know why David Eaves, the co-founder of ReCollect, thinks open data is important? It all starts with a story from a friend who worked in the Canadian federal government. On this week’s featured ODTV video, Eaves recalls that the friend “had a summer intern whose only job for three weeks was to go and find data from the Stats Canada website that they knew existed, but nobody could ever find.”

For Eaves, much of the promise of open data springs from the way it can help government work more effectively internally — so summer interns can have more meaningful jobs, and data is readily available and accessible. But also important is providing information to citizens in the moment when it would be most useful. As he puts it, “There’s definitely evidence that shows us that when people have information, they’ll make better choices.”

Watch Eaves talk about his involvement with Vancouver’s pioneering open data push, why he thinks open data is so vital, and much more, in this week’s featured ODTV video, or browse our library of videos to see more.
