Now Hiring: Data Jobs in Governments Across the US
Through credit card swipes or social media likes, people generate data constantly, and those who know how to maintain, analyze, and learn from it are in high demand. In fact, data scientist is one of the hottest jobs around — a recent LinkedIn report identified it as a top emerging role. And, it’s not only the private sector that sees the possibilities in data analysis. Cities, states, counties, and federal agencies are competing for tech-talent too.
For governments, massive amounts of data are nothing new. They’re in the data collection business, constantly gathering up data. These days, there’s just a lot more of that data available. And, deep within all those terrabytes is information that can help governments provide better service to constituents.
That’s a challenge governments are eager to take on.
Colorado was the first state to create the role of chief data officer back in 2010. Since then, many states — and other levels of government — have followed suit. (Earlier this year, Government Technology shared a list of cities and states with chief data officer positions.) Governments do more now than collect and store data. They share it — sometimes publicly on portals, and sometimes internally — and use it to track progress on major goals, inform how resources are allocated, guide strategy, and steer policy efforts.
As in the private sector, data analysis jobs demand a mix of skills: knowledge of statistics, computer science abilities, strong communication, and analytical skills. If you’re the kind of person who likes digging into the data and using analytics to solve problems and determine public policy, there are many opportunities to apply those skills in government. And typically, these are roles are true leadership positions, reflecting the increasing turn within government toward data-driven decision-making and government’s need for high-level employees who are confident interpreting, analyzing, and leveraging data.

Research Analyst — Connecticut’s Office of Policy and Management
The Office of Policy and Management in Connecticut is hiring a research analyst to work alongside the state’s chief data officer to tackle statewide issues. The person in this role will help agencies use data to further the effectiveness of programs and policies. The research analyst will develop databases, implement research projects, prepare reports, and both analyze and interpret data.
San Diego County — Chief Data Officer
This California county is hiring its first-ever chief data officer, who will be responsible for developing a strategy for the county’s data use and storage and promoting transparency. Another major focus for the role is using analytics to facilitate data-driven decision-making.
